Audio Visual work

Audio visual work:

30 second Interview:

What is the inspiration of your sound?

Growing up Chensu was raised on quite a variety of music from Nirvana to Otis Redding, but Chensu really fell in love with noise rock and shoegaze in their early teens. we love the way a guitar can express so much emotion, especially in the walls of sound created by Dinosaur Jr and the soundscapes created by Candy Claws.

What is the message behind the song?

Chensu really feels that each person can interpret this song and take their own meaning from it, but personally, drunk walk home is a middle finger up to gender norms and an expression of the consequences, particularly on mental health. Mental health is a big thing for Chensu and especially in the lockdown we are currently in and Chensu felt it was really important to represent in the imagery of the music video.

My Audio visual work is a 1 minute interview with my artist, for this I used audio animation and a voice modulator to add to the secrecy of my artist, but added more visual elements such as pictures to still make the video worth watching. For the intro and questions I used a similar technique to my Music Video intro in creating a glitch effect on top of a static image, which I created in photoshop.

Final push

 One of the last drafts:

Utilising an old TV I created this effect where the music video more explicitly reflects a mental state, with the tv reflecting as a visual representation. Screens within screens are also reflect Andrew Goodwin's work on voyeurism and screens within screens.

This effect intertextualises this picture by Shawn Paul:

As the TV is old I had to connect the screen through a series of cables, converting the scar to AV cables and then the AV cables to HDMI which I then could connect an old computer. Due to the over complicated process of this, the video lost colour. I liked this effect however and decided to keep it.

Intro

I wanted to keep the intro clean and have clear brand identity so in order to do that I used the same font I had previously used while developing the website. In order to make the intro less boring, I proceeded t edit a glitching effect, as it is being shown on an old tv. I think that this works well especially with the increased glitching complimenting the gothic font.

performance

(Raw footage)

some feedback I have received was to include more performance within my video so I took a video of myself playing bass chords to drunk walk home then edited it with a fish eye lens and cropped it, in a similar style to feed me with your kiss by my bloody valentine.

Extra scene work

I wanted to include more intertextuality within the music video particular the 'All work, no play' scene from the shining. Not only does the horror genre feed well into both my artist image and sound of the song, but the horror genre has been very influential within promoting LGBTQ+ and unconforming identities.

creating a storefront

I went through a couple ideas surrounding the shop, but settled with the shop being an interactive slider. This meaning that people will spend longer in this section and subsequently experience the intertextual jump scare of 'The Shining' twins (they appear after 8 seconds on the page).

updating website templating

creating my own designs for the website means they have to stay cohesive and subsequently fairly simple. The use of a tv in this section reflects not only the screens within screens genre convention, but also acts as a reference to the old way of consuming music videos - through tv.

draft of video

Mostly done there is a few inconsistencies which I want to alter like jolty fade in and fade outs, I would like to reuse this footage onto an old chunky tv :

like this.

not only will it make some of the low quality footage more cohesive, filling up the spare time, but it also creates a more visual representation that the video is a visual reflection of a conflicting mental space.

I also need to add in more footage for the 0:20-0:40 period. For this I will have a burning barbie, a reflection of the anti gender performativity brief I originally set out

On reflection I have also seen that I should add the title of the song at the beginning of the video to better reflect the conventions of a music video.
